PROSE
- Sudha Murty
Ans : Thandappa is more than ninety years old. He lived in a cottage near the school. Regarding the difficulties is running the school, the headman Thandappa told that the main difficulty was running the school in rains. The school clothes would not get dry in the rainy season. He was pleased to meet the writer. Next time in winter when the writer came with clothes and umbrellas for the school children, Thandappa hesitated. The children in the village were in need of clothes and umbrellas. However, Thandappa did not willfully accept the gifts. He wanted to offer the writer a return gift first. It was their tradition that no gift must be accepted unless something is gifted. It was a high valued principle which the ancestors of Thandas have been following. Thandappa, the headman wished to follow it.
Ans : The school was an old thatched building. The writer thought that the school was built by tribals. It was a primary school. There was a small room with two chairs, two tables and a blackboard with a pot of water beside it. There were no electric lights or fans. The window having no shutter served as a ventilator. There was nobody in the office. An old man came to the writer. The writer told her intention of helping the school but the old man did not show interest in it. Then the writer asked him about his life. He told that he was a peon-cum-watchman of the school. He was not a paid employee of the school.
Ans : When the writer visited the Sahyadri Hills again, the rain was over. The scene was transformed. Birds were cooing. The sky was clear. There was no mud and no frogs croaking. It was look like paradise. Many rare flowers had bloomed.
Earlier she had visited in the rainy season. Dreaded leeches were present. That region was difficult to negotiate in rains. However now everything seem changed. The transformation was pleasant. The writer called it a paradise.
Ans : It was a remote densely forested hilly region. Primary facilities were absent and children of Thandas were going to school amidst great difficulty. There was no electric lights or fans but the children have heard about computers. They haven’t seen them but watched on TV. They wished to learn about computers. They asked for a book about computers written in Kannada. Their mother tongue was Kannada. They wanted to learn about computers in their own language. It shows that their mindset was progressive. They knew the importance of computers and wanted to learn to use it. Their world was far away from the world of computers. However, they wanted to know about it in their language, because they might have thought that it would be easy to learn. The mindset of the students is progressive and also they took pride in their language. Their curiosity about computers proved that they wanted to establish link with modernity equally showing love for what was their own and ancient.
Ans : This sentence in the extract is highlighted in the context of the humility that is shown here. No doubt the tribals are not educated. They are extremely poor and live in the distant region. They are not connected with the progressive and modern world. So generally nobody will expect high philosophical principles from them. Moreover, one would think that the tribals would run after the donor and snatch away the gift articles from him. However, the experience which the writer had was exactly opposite. She was told that without accepting something as a gift from the Thandas they would not accept gift brought by her. She had to follow this condition. Thus, by accepting the gift from the Thandas she made them feel pleased. The headman Thandappa was above 90 years of age. He particularly observed their tribal customs. When the writer accepted the gift of juice, their headman was also pleased. He wanted to convey that by accepting their gift the writer had done a graceful deed.
Ans : The writer is a social worker. She is very helpful and caring. The Indian tribals had been living at distant places. They were ignored and marginalized from years together. For their upliftment education was a must. The writer took the mission of doing something for the tribals. She would go to their village in dense forest and see what they need in order to get education. In course of her visit her encounters with the tribals, would give her different experiences. The tribals would shy either by the issue of unidentity or language. Then the writer would make them speak to her. Somehow, she would know what difficulties they had been facing and discussed their wayout. The encounters show that the writer’s attitude was kind, caring and touching. The attitude changes as the narrative progresses.
Ans : Sahyadri hills are situated in the state of Karnataka.
Ans : The group of local tribals living in the densely forested region in Sahyadri hills.
Ans : They were reluctant to talk to the writer because they didn’t like to talk to a stranger from a town or they didn’t understand the writer’s language.
Ans: When Murthy visited the school in winter, she brought umbrellas and clothes.
Ans : Thandappa is more than ninety years old the headman of the Thanda community.

POETRY
1. WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR
Rabindranath Tagore
COMPREHENSION
Ans : The poet expects an atmosphere of enlightenment where the truth prevails. In such an atmosphere his countrymen will preserve and try to achieve their goal. The thoughts and actions of the countrymen will be guided by reason and so they will always move forward and achieve what they aspire for. People who are guided by reason are progressive and innovative and their efforts are not frustrated by conventionality.
The poet’s tone in the poem is patriotic. India was under the British rule. Diversity with respect of caste, language, religion and region has been the specialty of India. Under the British Regime of ‘Divide and Rule’ Indians were fighting against each other. Unless unity is achieved how was the freedom struggle reach its goal? It was need of hour that people live in unity and speak in one voice. The poet has successfully resounded this feeling in this poem that Enlightenment would lead to independence for India.
Ans : ‘ Where the Mind is Without Fear’ composed by R. Tagore. His prayer is not the individual but for the entire country. The situation obtaining in the country- universal depravity and degeneration- calls for a comprehensive overhaul of thought and action of the country. Heaven is the place where ideal conditions exist and so the poet prays for ‘that heaven of freedom’ in which his country may awake. The words ‘Heaven’ and ‘Freedom’ are evocative of a place where everything is beautiful and where there are no fear, oppression, subjugation, division etc. Where truth prevail pursuit of knowledge and excellence are the ways of life.
Ans : Where the mind is without fear is a poem written by 1993 Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore before India’s independence. It represents Tagore’s vision of a new and awakened India. The poem is written in the form of a prayer, an invocation to Almighty. It is written in free verse. ‘Mind is without fear’ – the phrase alludes to the fact that our minds should be fearless. We should not be daunted by the shackles of oppression. Fear should not be able to daunt us. Our heads should be held high, without any form of fear or restriction. The poem envisions a ‘ World of freedom’ that can only be gained if the countrymen are fearless. Only a fearless mind can hold his head upright and straight.
Ans : The poet prays to Almighty to create an atmosphere of enlightenment that nobody in his country will be restrained from acquiring knowledge on grounds of their poverty, religion or caste. The poet wants that if a person desires to seek knowledge he must be free to get it. Tagore dislikes his countrymen to be divided on the basis of religion, culture, caste, region or language. He says that such divisions give birth to hatred, non co-operation, backwardness, ignorance etc. Unity is strength and leads the countrymen to move forward in all walks of physical, moral and spiritual activity. The trees in this garden burst forth their delicate blossom in the spring and bore delicious fruit in autumn. The flowers looked like stars, the birds sang merrily in the trees. Children returning from a neighboring school played in the garden every afternoon. They enjoyed the singing of the birds. When they parted in the evening they said to each other that they felt very happy to play in the garden.
The Giant’s garden in which the children played was very lovely with soft green grass. There stood beautiful flowers like stars over the grass. There were twelve peach trees giving beautiful pink and pearl during spring and bore rich fruit in autumn. The bird sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that children would stop there games in order to listen to them.
Ans : Children fell very unhappy at the selfishness of the Giant. Even nature did not like this selfishness of the Giant in reserving the garden all to himself and not allowing the children to share the pleasure of playing in the garden. When spring season came, trees and plants everywhere outside were in bloom. There was an exuberance of growth of foliage and flowers accompanying the spring but the garden of the Giant had the appearance of winter. Trees were covered with frost. There were no flowers. Cold north wind blew incessantly. Half storms toppled the chimney and damaged the state titles on the roof of the house of the Giant. There were no birds on the trees and snow lay thick on the ground. The Giant wished that the weather would change but spring never came to his garden.
Ans : The Giant had a garden around his house. When he had gone to visit his friend, the children used to play in that beautiful garden. He return after seven years. He stopped the children from playing in the garden. He got a wall constructed around the garden. He also put a notice board that trespassers would be punished.
That spring there were no flowers and birds in his garden. The snow, the hail, the frost and the north wind only stayed in his garden. He thought that the spring would come after some days but it never turned up. He could not understand the reason.
So there remained autumn in his garden spring did not come there. The autumn did not give fruits to the Giant’s garden because he did not allow the children playing there.
Ans : One day as the Giant woke up, he heard the music of birds in the trees of his garden. As he looked out of his window he was surprised to see that the trees were in full bloom, the birds were singing merrily in the trees and children were playing freely in the garden. happy but in one corner of the garden he saw a very small boy crying. The boy wanted some help to sit on a branch of a tree as he was too small. The trees in that corner had the withered appearance of winter.
The Giant’s heart melted and he said ‘ now I know why the spring did not come’, He came out of his house to help the small boy in the corner. As he hastened through the garden, other children were frightened and they ran away. But the small boy was in tears and could not see the Giant, who picked him up and put tenderly on a branch of a nearly tree. Nature showed its appreciation of the kindness of the Giant and that tree burst forth in foliage sand blossom.

He knelt before the boy asking ‘who art thou?’ The boy said to the Giant, ‘ You let me play once in your garden, today you will come with met my garden-Paradise!’ When other children came to the garden in the afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under a tree covered with white flowers.
